The professional summary is the most important part of your NZ CV. It sits directly below your contact details and is the first substantive thing a recruiter reads. Get it wrong and everything else may never be seen.

What Is a Professional Summary?

A professional summary (also called a profile statement) is a 3–4 sentence paragraph at the top of your CV. It replaces the old-fashioned "objective statement" — instead of telling the employer what you want, it tells them what you offer.

The Professional Summary Formula

  1. Sentence 1: Professional identity + years of experience in this area.
  2. Sentence 2: Two or three specific strengths directly relevant to this role.
  3. Sentence 3: A concrete achievement or credential that validates the claim.
  4. Sentence 4 (optional): What you are looking for next — brief and role-specific.

Examples of Strong NZ Professional Summaries

IT Manager: "IT leader with 12 years building and managing infrastructure for financial services and healthcare organisations. Strong background in cloud migration, cybersecurity, and leading high-performing technical teams. Most recently led a $2.3M Azure migration for an 800-person NZ organisation, delivering on schedule and 8% under budget. Now seeking a senior IT leadership role in a purpose-driven NZ organisation."

Administration Coordinator: "Experienced office coordinator with 8 years supporting executive teams in professional services and not-for-profit environments. Skilled in complex diary management, board-level governance support, and implementing administrative processes that save time and reduce errors. NZ citizen available immediately."

Critical rule: Your professional summary must be rewritten for every application. It should reference the specific role title and connect directly to the top 2–3 requirements from the job description. A generic summary is almost worse than no summary at all.
