A South African CV has its own conventions — shaped by POPIA personal information law, Employment Equity legislation, the reality of ATS screening in larger organisations, and a job market where professional registration can be more important than your degree. Getting these right significantly improves your chances in one of the world's most competitive job markets, where the national unemployment rate stood at 31.9% in Q3 2025 (Statistics South Africa, QLFS Q3:2025).
SA CV format — the basics
| Element | South African standard 2026 |
|---|---|
| Length | 2–3 pages for most professionals. Graduates: 2 pages. Senior managers/executives: 3–4 pages acceptable. |
| Page size | A4 (210 × 297mm) |
| Font | Calibri, Arial, or Verdana — 10–11pt body text, 12–14pt headings |
| Layout | Single column for ATS compatibility. Many SA employers use PageUp, Workday, or PNet's own ATS. |
| Photo | Do not include. POPIA and Employment Equity considerations make photos on CVs inappropriate. |
| File format | PDF for email and most online applications. Some government portals require DOCX — check the job advert. |
| Language | South African English (British conventions: colour, organise, programme, practise) |
What personal information to include — POPIA guidance
The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), which came into full force on 1 July 2021, governs how personal data is collected and processed in South Africa. Recruiters and employers are bound by POPIA and should not request unnecessary sensitive personal data early in a recruitment process. As a job seeker, you are not legally required to provide much of the information that older SA CV templates still include.
Include on your SA CV
- Full name
- City and province (e.g. "Johannesburg, Gauteng" — not your full street address)
- Mobile number and professional email address
- LinkedIn URL (optional but increasingly expected for professional roles)
- Work authorisation status if you are not a South African citizen or permanent resident
- Professional registration number if applicable (HPCSA, ECSA, SAICA, SACAP, SACE, SACSSP)
- Languages spoken with proficiency levels — this is a genuine differentiator in multilingual SA
Do NOT include on your SA CV
- ID number — never on a CV
- Date of birth — not required at CV stage
- Race or ethnicity designation — provided separately on EE forms if required
- Marital status or number of dependants
- Religion or political affiliation
- Full home address
- Photo — never
SA CV section by section
1. Header
Name prominently at top. Then: city/province, mobile, professional email, LinkedIn URL (optional), professional registration number if applicable.
2. Professional profile / career summary (3–5 lines)
Tailor for every application. State your professional identity, years of experience, strongest achievement, and what you bring to this specific role. Do not use "I" — implied third person is standard in SA CVs.
"CA(SA)-qualified Financial Manager with 9 years in South African FMCG and retail, specialising in management accounting, cost optimisation, and financial controls. Reduced overhead costs by R4.2M at current employer through supply chain renegotiations and process redesign. Seeking a CFO-track role in a listed or pre-IPO South African business."
3. Key competencies (6–10 skills)
Mirror the exact language of the job advertisement. SA ATS platforms (PNet, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors) score applications on keyword match — use the same terminology as the advert.
4. Work experience (reverse-chronological)
For each role: company name, industry sector, job title, dates (MM/YYYY), one-line scope, and 3–5 achievement bullets with Rand amounts, percentages, or outcomes.
5. Education
Highest qualification first. Include: institution, degree/qualification name, majors, year completed. Include Matric/NSC if no tertiary qualification — or for recent graduates. If you have professional certifications, list them separately.
6. Professional registration and memberships
South African professional registration is highly valued and sometimes legally required. Include: registration body, membership grade, registration number, and status. See below for key SA professional bodies.
7. Languages
South Africa has 11 official languages. Include your languages and proficiency levels — this is a genuine differentiator, particularly for roles requiring community engagement, government liaison, or multilingual customer service. Format: "isiZulu (native), English (fluent), Afrikaans (conversational)."
8. References
"References available on request" is standard in South Africa. Some government applications request written reference letters — keep recent ones accessible. Do not include referee contact details on the CV itself.
