Everything you need to write a professional, ATS-ready British CV โ format, length, personal profile, Equality Act compliance, and what UK employers actually want to see in 2026.
In the United Kingdom the document is always called a CV (curriculum vitae) โ never a resume. The term "resume" is American and using it on a UK application immediately signals unfamiliarity with the British market.
The standard UK CV in 2026 is a two-page document written in British English. It follows a reverse-chronological format, leads with a personal profile, and is structured to pass both ATS screening and the six-to-eight second scan a recruiter gives each application before deciding whether to read further.
UK CVs differ from US resumes in several important ways: they are longer (two pages versus one), include a personal profile rather than a career objective, use British spelling throughout, and omit photographs and personal details to comply with the Equality Act 2010.
| Element | UK Standard 2026 |
|---|---|
| Page size | A4 (210 ร 297mm) โ never US Letter. British office systems are set to A4 as standard; a US Letter CV may print incorrectly. |
| Font | Calibri, Arial, or Helvetica โ 10โ11pt body, 14โ16pt name. Times New Roman is considered dated for UK CVs in 2026. |
| Layout | Single column only โ two-column layouts break ATS parsing. |
| Line spacing | 1.0โ1.15 โ tight enough to maximise content, open enough to scan. |
| Margins | 2โ2.5cm on all sides |
| Tables | None โ ATS systems (Workday, Taleo, Oracle Recruiting Cloud) cannot extract text from tables. |
| Graphics/images | None โ ATS cannot process images, icons, or decorative elements. |
| File format | PDF (preferred) โ preserves layout across devices. DOCX if employer specifically requests it. |
| File name | FirstName-LastName-CV.pdf (e.g. Sarah-Jones-CV.pdf) |
| Date format | MM/YYYY or Month YYYY (e.g. June 2023 or 06/2023) โ British standard. |
| Colour | Black body text on white background. Minimal colour acceptable in section headings only โ conservative is always safer. |
The personal profile (also called a personal statement or professional summary) is the single most-read section of a UK CV. It sits directly below the contact block and is typically 3โ4 sentences โ never more than 6 lines.
Its purpose is to answer three questions in rapid succession: Who are you professionally? What are you best at? What are you looking for? UK recruiters spend the most time on this section before deciding whether to read the rest of the CV.
"Results-driven Marketing Manager with eight years leading digital campaigns for B2B technology companies. Delivered a 43% increase in qualified leads year-on-year at current employer through data-led SEO and paid media strategy. Seeking a senior marketing leadership role where I can build and develop a high-performing team."
Your name prominently at the top, then on one line: city and region only (e.g. "London" or "Manchester, Greater Manchester") โ never a full street address. Phone number. Professional email address. LinkedIn URL if maintained. If you are not a UK citizen or permanent resident, you may include a single line stating your right-to-work status (e.g. "Eligible to work in the UK โ Skilled Worker Visa"). Employers conduct formal right-to-work checks after making an offer โ detailed visa information is not required on the CV.
A dedicated skills section with 6โ10 items drawn directly from the job description. Use the exact terminology from the job posting โ ATS systems score CVs on keyword matches. Skills are increasingly split into categories: Technical Skills, Tools and Software, and Languages rather than one undifferentiated list.
Most recent role first. For each position: job title, company name, city, dates (MM/YYYY to MM/YYYY or "Present"). Then 3โ6 achievement-focused bullet points. Every bullet should show what you did and what the measurable result was. "Managed a team" is weaker than "Managed a team of eight engineers, reducing sprint cycle time by 22%." For roles older than ten years, a brief summary line is sufficient โ you do not need to document every role in full detail.
Reverse chronological โ most recent first. Include degree title, institution, classification (e.g. First Class Honours, 2:1), and year. For recent graduates: also include A-level results with individual grades, and a GCSE summary. For experienced professionals: education section can be condensed. If your qualifications were awarded outside the UK, include the full institution name and country. For regulated professions (medicine, law, nursing, teaching), you will need formal recognition of overseas qualifications.
Key UK professional qualifications carry significant weight โ list them prominently. Include the full qualification name, awarding body, and year. See Section 8 for UK professional qualifications by sector.
The following are acceptable on UK CVs when genuinely relevant: Languages (with proficiency level โ "French: Business proficiency"). Volunteer work (especially if it demonstrates leadership or skills relevant to the role). Publications (for specialist or academic roles). Hobbies and interests โ brief, optional, and only if genuinely distinctive. "Captain of county cricket team" is worth including; "reading and cooking" is not.
"References available upon request" โ this is the standard UK closing line. Alternatively, omit the line entirely. Both are acceptable. Only include named referees if the job advert specifically asks for them. If references are requested, provide two: one from your most recent employer and one from a previous role.
Applicant Tracking Systems are used by the majority of medium and large UK employers to screen and rank applications before a human reviewer sees them. The most widely used ATS platforms in UK hiring are Workday, Taleo, Oracle Recruiting Cloud, SAP SuccessFactors, and iCIMS.
A CV that is not ATS-compatible will be filtered out regardless of the candidate's qualifications and experience. ATS compatibility and recruiter readability are not in conflict โ a well-structured, clean CV performs well on both.
British English spelling is required throughout a UK CV. American spelling is the clearest signal of a generic, non-localised application โ UK recruiters notice it, and it can cost you the interview. Set your spell checker to English (United Kingdom) in Microsoft Word before writing.
| British English (correct) | American English (wrong for UK) |
|---|---|
| colour, favour, honour, labour | color, favor, honor, labor |
| organisation, recognise, realise, optimise | organization, recognize, realize, optimize |
| centre, theatre, fibre | center, theater, fiber |
| programme (non-IT contexts) | program |
| analyse, summarise, specialise | analyze, summarize, specialize |
| travelling, modelling, cancelling | traveling, modeling, canceling |
| behaviour, neighbour, harbour | behavior, neighbor, harbor |
| catalogue, dialogue | catalog, dialog |
Note: "Program" is the standard spelling in technology contexts in both UK and US English โ software programs, programming, programs of code. "Programme" is used for schedules, projects, and non-IT contexts.
The Equality Act 2010 prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of nine protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.
As a result of this legislation, UK employers actively discourage candidates from including personal information that could reveal these characteristics. Including a photo or date of birth on a UK CV is considered poor practice in 2026 โ it signals unfamiliarity with UK hiring norms and can actually work against you.
ATS systems used across the UK (Workday, Taleo, Oracle Recruiting Cloud) also cannot process photographs and will discard them during parsing โ so including a photo actively harms your ATS performance as well as creating potential discrimination issues.
Right to work: Employers cannot legally require you to disclose detailed immigration status on a CV. If you need to confirm your right to work, a single line in your personal profile or header is sufficient: "Eligible to work in the UK" or "Skilled Worker Visa holder." Employers conduct formal right-to-work checks after making an offer โ detailed visa information is not required on the CV.
Professional qualifications carry significant weight in the UK job market. "Chartered" status from a UK professional body signals a recognised standard of expertise to British employers. Always include relevant qualifications prominently โ in your personal profile if they are critical to the role, and in a dedicated section below your education.

| CIPD (Level 3, 5, or 7) | Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development | HR and People Management |

Every line must earn its place. Cut anything that does not directly support your candidacy for this specific role. A two-page CV that is well-edited is always stronger than a three-page CV with filler. UK recruiters read the personal profile first, then experience โ they rarely reach a third page unless the first two have already impressed them.
Handling a long career: For candidates with more than fifteen years of experience, you do not need to document every role in full. Roles from more than ten years ago can be summarised in a single brief line: "2010โ2014: Various project management roles across construction and infrastructure sectors โ full details available on request."
Despite the rise of automated screening, 67% of UK recruiters consider a tailored cover letter important or essential for professional roles (Robert Half / Reuters, 2026). A well-written cover letter can turn a "maybe" CV into an interview invitation.
UK employers increasingly use ATS to screen cover letters as well as CVs. Use the same keyword mirroring approach โ include exact phrases from the person specification (e.g. "stakeholder engagement," "project governance," "regulatory compliance") and save as PDF.
Understanding which platforms to use โ and how to use them โ is as important as having a strong CV. The UK job market in 2026 is competitive: the number of applications per vacancy is increasing, and candidates need to use every available advantage.
