1. South African CV Basics

In South Africa the document is always called a CV โ€” using the word "resume" is uncommon and can signal unfamiliarity with the local market. Refer to it as a CV in all your applications.

South Africa has a highly competitive job market. Recruiters typically screen dozens โ€” sometimes hundreds โ€” of CVs per role. Your CV must communicate relevance, clarity, and measurable results in the first few seconds of being read. A duty list will not get you shortlisted. A results-driven, quantified CV will.

The SA job market has its own distinct conventions shaped by the Employment Equity Act, POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act), 11 official languages, and ATS platforms used by major corporates. Understanding these is the difference between a CV that gets filed and one that gets a call.

Key fact: PNet and CareerJunction โ€” both launched in 1997 โ€” together account for the majority of active online job applications in South Africa. Most large corporate employers also use ATS platforms such as Workday, SmartRecruiters, and Taleo. Your CV must work for both human readers and automated screening systems.

2. Format and Layout

ElementSouth Africa Standard 2026
Page sizeA4 (210 ร— 297mm) โ€” never US Letter
Length1โ€“2 pages for most candidates. Senior executives may extend to 3 pages only if every line earns its place.
FontCalibri, Arial, or Cambria โ€” 10โ€“11.5pt body text, 12โ€“14pt headings
LayoutSingle column only โ€” two-column layouts break ATS parsing
TablesNone in core content โ€” ATS systems cannot extract text from tables
Graphics/imagesNone โ€” ATS cannot process icons or decorative elements
PhotoOmit unless the employer explicitly requests one. POPIA best practice favours omission to reduce bias.
File formatPDF preferred. DOCX if a recruitment agency specifically requests it for their ATS.
File nameFirstname-Lastname-CV-TargetRole.pdf (e.g. Jane-Smith-CV-Operations-Manager.pdf)
Date formatMMM YYYYโ€“MMM YYYY (e.g. Feb 2022โ€“Aug 2025) throughout
ATS quick test: Copy and paste your entire CV into Notepad or TextEdit in plain text mode. If all your content appears clearly and in the right order, it will pass ATS. If sections are scrambled or missing, your layout is the problem โ€” rebuild as single-column plain text with simple headings.

3. POPIA and Personal Data: What to Include and What to Leave Out

The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) has been fully in force in South Africa since July 2021. It governs how employers and recruitment agencies collect, store, and use personal data โ€” including information on your CV. Under POPIA principles, employers are encouraged to minimise collection of sensitive personal information.

Include on your CV

Do NOT include on your CV

Photo: South Africa has historically been more photo-friendly than NZ or Australia, but this is changing. To reduce bias risk and align with POPIA principles, omit your photo unless the employer explicitly requests it. Many corporate employers and agencies now actively prefer CVs without photos.

4. Section by Section

Header

Name prominently at the top. Then: city and province (e.g. "Sandton, Gauteng"), mobile, professional email, LinkedIn URL. Optional: driver's licence code, notice period, languages. Do NOT include full street address, ID number, date of birth, or race.

Professional Profile (3โ€“5 lines)

A concise, value-rich summary aligned to the target role. Name your strongest relevant outcomes and the type of role you're seeking. This is the most-read section โ€” tailor it for every application. Generic profiles are filtered out immediately.

"Senior Operations Manager with 10 years in FMCG logistics, specialising in cost optimisation and cross-functional team leadership. Reduced distribution cost-to-serve by 12% and improved on-time-in-full from 87% to 96% at current employer. Seeking an Operations Lead role in a national growth-focused business."

Key Skills (6โ€“10 items)

Mix technical and behavioural skills. Mirror the exact language used in the job advert where it accurately reflects your skills โ€” ATS systems score CVs on keyword matches.

Work Experience (reverse-chronological)

Most recent role first. For each: employer, job title, city, dates (MMM YYYYโ€“MMM YYYY), one-line scope, then 3โ€“6 achievement bullets with metrics.

Education and Certifications

Highest qualification first. Include awarding institution, qualification, year, and NQF level where known. For foreign qualifications, note that SAQA equivalence is available or has been obtained โ€” apply at saqa.org.za.

Languages

List all languages you speak with an honest proficiency level. This is a genuine differentiator in the SA market โ€” see Section 7.

Professional Memberships (optional)

Include if relevant: SABPP, SAICA, HPCSA, SAPICS, PRISA, SACSSP etc.

References

"Available on request" is perfectly standard. Provide referee details after shortlisting โ€” not on the CV itself.

5. ATS Compatibility

Major South African employers use Applicant Tracking Systems to screen CVs before any human sees them. The most common platforms in the SA market include Workday, SmartRecruiters, Taleo, and PNet's own ATS.

Keyword strategy: Read the job advert carefully and identify the 8โ€“12 most important terms. Include these naturally in your Professional Profile and Key Skills. Do not stuff keywords into hidden text โ€” modern ATS detects this.

6. South African English Spelling

South African English follows British spelling conventions. Do not use American spellings โ€” this signals unfamiliarity with the local market.

South African (correct)American (incorrect for SA)
colour, colour-codedcolor, color-coded
organisation, organisedorganization, organized
programmeprogram (except computer software)
analyse, analysedanalyze, analyzed
behaviour, behaviouralbehavior, behavioral
labour relationslabor relations
licence (noun), license (verb)license (both)
optimise, maximiseoptimize, maximize
centre, centredcenter, centered
practise (verb), practice (noun)practice (both)
Spell-check warning: Word and Google Docs default to US English. Before finalising your CV, change the document language to "English (South Africa)" or "English (United Kingdom)" to catch American spelling errors automatically.

7. Multilingualism: A Real Competitive Advantage

South Africa has 11 official languages. In a highly competitive job market, multilingualism is a genuine advantage โ€” not a nice-to-have. Listing your language abilities correctly can directly improve your chances, particularly for roles involving customer contact, community engagement, healthcare, education, or regional operations.

Include a languages section (or add languages to your header block) with a clear proficiency level for each:

Example: Languages: English (native), isiZulu (fluent), Afrikaans (conversational)

Why this matters: Many South African employers explicitly value African language proficiency for roles in healthcare, retail, government, community development, financial services, and education. An English + Zulu or English + Afrikaans combination can meaningfully distinguish your application from equally qualified candidates who list English only.

8. Employment Equity and B-BBEE: What You Need to Know

South Africa's Employment Equity Act (No. 55 of 1998) โ€” most recently amended effective 1 January 2025 โ€” requires designated employers (50+ employees) to meet representation targets for designated groups across 18 economic sectors. This shapes how employers write job adverts and make hiring decisions.

You will frequently see phrases on job adverts such as: "EE candidates will be given preference," "This position supports the company's Employment Equity Plan," or "Suitably qualified candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply."

On your CV: Do not include B-BBEE or EE information. Employers manage this through their own internal processes. You do not need to state your race, gender, or disability status on a CV.

In an application: Some employers include a separate EE declaration form. Complete it when asked โ€” this is a legal compliance requirement for the employer, not a value judgement on your candidacy.

NQF levels and SAQA: If you hold a foreign qualification, SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) evaluation is available at saqa.org.za. For local qualifications, include your NQF level where known โ€” particularly important for regulated professions and government roles.

9. Writing Achievement Bullets That Get You Shortlisted

South African recruiters are trained to look for quantified evidence of impact, not lists of duties. The difference between a CV that gets shortlisted and one that doesn't is almost always in the bullet points.

Achievement-focused (correct)

Duties-focused (incorrect)

Quantify with Rands (R), percentages (%), time units, volumes, and quality measures. Aim for 3โ€“6 achievement bullets per role. Move your strongest, most relevant achievement to the top of each role's bullet list.

No exact figures? Use reasonable approximations: "approximately R3.5m in annual savings" or "reduced complaint resolution time by an estimated 30%." A reasoned estimate is far more useful to a recruiter than a generic duty description.

10. What Not to Include

11. South African Cover Letter Conventions

A cover letter (sometimes called a motivational letter for government and public sector roles) is expected when a job advert requests one. Many SA employers โ€” particularly in corporate, professional services, and government sectors โ€” treat a missing cover letter as a sign of low motivation.

Salary: Do not include salary expectations unless the advert specifically requests them. If asked, provide a range rather than a fixed figure.

12. South African Job Boards 2026

South Africa has a mature online recruitment market dominated by two major platforms, with several specialist boards for specific sectors and seniority levels.

Job BoardBest for
PNet (pnet.co.za)South Africa's largest board โ€” 2 million+ registered job seekers. Strong across all sectors and experience levels. Widely used by corporate employers and agencies. Has its own ATS. Upload your CV for passive discoverability.
CareerJunction (careerjunction.co.za)Second-largest platform, operating since 1997. Particularly strong in IT, finance, and engineering. Used by corporate and specialist recruiters for mid to senior roles.
Careers24Large generalist board. Good for entry to mid-level professionals across diverse industries.
LinkedInEssential for professional networking and passive job discovery. SA recruiters actively source here โ€” an optimised profile matters.
ExecutivePlacementsSpecialist platform for senior professional and executive roles. Strong in accounting, finance, engineering, healthcare, and management.
Indeed South AfricaGlobal aggregator with strong SA presence. Aggregates from company websites and other boards.
Strategy tip: Upload your CV to PNet and CareerJunction to be discoverable to agencies doing passive searches. For senior roles, invest time in LinkedIn and direct contact with specialist recruiters โ€” many C-suite and senior management roles in SA are never publicly advertised.
